The best gig on TV

MIKE McDANIEL Staff - Houston Chronicle

Johnathan Walton must have the best beat in television. Channel 11 pays him to go out and do stories with the oddest people in Houston.

It suits him well, because clearly this fearless reporter suffers from Otis Disorder, an affliction, common among people in the media, in which the elevator doesn't always rise to the top.

But that's why we love him, right?

Clearly the folks at KHOU love him, which is why he's back with yet another compilation of stories that previously aired on Channel 11's morning news show.

The latest edition, The Best of Walton's World Summer Blowout!, features Johnathan with a kite flier, Johnathan with a Power Ranger turned karate instructor, Johnathan with a rubber-band-ball maker, Johnathan ... well, you get the idea.

Tonight's 30-minute special (7 p.m., Channel 11) is fast-moving and fun-filled, with Walton, as usual, the butt of his own jokes. He eats Blue Bell ice cream rejects out of the garbage, gets nipped by a Frisbee-loving dog and gets ridiculed by patrons at Galveston's Schlitterbahn.

Enjoy.

TV FEATURE / Jump on the Walton slam-wagon

MIKE MCDANIEL Staff - Houston Chronicle

This week and next, most of the TV lineups will be Rerun City because the networks think most people are on holiday or too busy to focus on matters of the tube.

But what's bad for the networks is good for local stations, which can trot out special programs without fear of interrupting that can't-miss episode of "Yes, Dear."

It gives Channel 11's resident humorist Johnathan Walton a chance to hang out in garbage dumpsters, and there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, host humiliation is the theme of "The Best of Walton's World Gone Wild!" (7:30 tonight, Channel 11).

When he's not losing his pants on the tennis court or being rebuked by a 17-year-old cellist, Walton's getting verbally and physically abused by his pals on tonight's half-hour special.

It is tempting to pile on and slam the show, except it moves so briskly and Walton's self-destruction is so complete, it seems a waste of time and ink. However, for the record (and this, after all, is a record of Walton's best reporting for 2005), the gadfly's visits with a Krispy Kreme doughnut maker, the head pro at Westside Tennis Club and the abusive cellist with the Houston Civic Symphony are worth catching if you can.

And if you're curious about what an "alternative lifestyle Darth Vader" or a "toilet plunger hickey" might look like, Walton spares no self-respect in showing us. Enjoy.

Walton's special is preceded by the unpreviewed "Houston Zooperstars Challenge", which promises to reveal the winning team of 9- to 12-year-olds who have been competing in a zoo-based contest all fall. Jeffrey Gardner hosts (7 p.m., Channel 11).

Finally, "The After Party "gets into the holiday spirit with a Christmas-themed edition and an audience of schoolchildren. Host Ernie Manouse welcomes special guests Ebenezer Scrooge and Santa Claus and reads from "'Twas the Night Before Christmas. "There's also a medley of songs from Wesley Landry and a special surprise at the end.

Too bad this edition, aimed at children, airs only at 11 tonight on Channel 8. At least we who are children at heart can tune in.

Funniest TV Reporter... EVER

by Sam Moore -
Houston Chronicle

He's an acquired taste, but there's something compelling about Johnathan Walton, who goofs his way through his "Small Mind at Large" segments on Channel 11's morning news show. A pudgy, puckish clown for the 21st century, Walton shines his quirky light in Houston's corners. A spot on carpet-dyeing was less than successful, but others, like his periodic pre-dawn Wake-Up Calls on local families and the time he dressed up like, and worked out with, the Houston Texan cheerleaders, have been a hoot.

He's won 4 Emmy awards for his 1/2 hour comedy specials for KHOU, the Houston CBS affiliate. When he arrived at Channel 11, the morning news show was 5th place in the ratings. Now they're number 1. Not that Walton is the sole reason for that but he certainly helped!

Funny guy Walton shuts window on news show

San Antonio Express News by Jeanne Jakle

Bye, bye, funny guy. One of local TV news' most distinctive personalities is shutting the window on San Antonio.

Specifically, "Walton's Window."

Johnathan Walton of KABB's 9 p.m. news revealed Wednesday that he is headed for what he calls a bigger opportunity at Houston's CBS affiliate. On KHOU, he'll be what he dubs "the morning show funny guy." Three days a week he'll present an off-the-wall feature about a Houston event, trend or activity that will be similar in style to the one he did every night on S.A.'s Fox affiliate. (It could be called "Walton's World" or "Waking Up With Walton," he mused.)

On the days he doesn't do this, he'll be on-set anchoring a segment, similar to "what Jon Stewart does on Comedy Central's 'The Daily Show,'" he said. Walton will comment irreverently on news happenings; among his subjects, of course, will be the easily spoofed news out of Hollywood. After all, he said, his official title in Houston will be entertainment anchor/reporter.

Though the hours may be tough to get used to - 5 a.m.-1 p.m. vs. his current 1-10 p.m. gig at KABB - he said the move represents quite a few steps up in market size and salary. Houston is No. 11 in U.S. market size vs. San Antonio at 37. And he says: "I'll be making more money than I've ever made in my life."

His last day is March 29, and he hopes to do "a blowout-extravaganza-retrospective-wrap-up" for his last piece. ("Walton's Window" appears right before the half-hour mark of the hourlong 9 p.m. news.)

Though he'll miss San Antonio and the following he earned here with his offbeat feature on everything from weird piercings to haunted railroad tracks to hot air balloon rides, Walton believes his move to Houston will bring him closer to his ultimate goal: to have his own national show ... maybe even on a network.

"Fox's 10 p.m. spot is still open," he said.

Uh-huh, OK. Modesty, obviously, is not one of Mr. Walton's strong points.

The morning TV news race tightens

KEN HOFFMAN Staff - Houston Chronicle

Here's what is at stake, according to Channel 11 general manager Peter Diaz:

"People who watch morning news generally watch more regularly and more frequently. So morning news viewers are highly sought after," Diaz said.

Approximately half a million people are watching television between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. in Houston. More than 400,000 of them are tuned into news.

Mornings are a great way to start a TV station's day.

"We think Deborah Duncan means a great deal to our newscast. She is incredibly personable and has great recognition in the market. Johnathan Walton is a colorful adventurer who showcases the lighter side of Houston," Diaz said.

Walton approaches news with comedy

San Antonio Express News
by Jeanne Jakle

I'm 45, for gosh sake, so what's with this sudden attraction to KABB's youth-oriented, MTV-paced, tattoo-and-piercing-mad "News at Nine"?
Midlife crisis?

More like mid-news crackup. The guy cracking me up is Johnathan Walton, who looks nothing like your typical blow-dried TV newsperson. You could describe him as a Gerber baby with facial hair. But his devilish brows and wicked humor make me think more of that kid from "The Omen."

His nightly spins on a San Antonio happening or oddity have to be the freshest example of local TV production to come along in a while.
"Walton's Window" is the name, likable irreverence is his game. A bonus: The viewer learns something new along the way.

Tonight, he takes on hot-air ballooning near Castroville. It'll be interesting to see how he handles being stranded in the middle of an empty field for more than an hour. The feature usually airs at the half-hour mark of the hourlong newscast right before weather. It's preceded by a clever piece of animation from KABB's graphic maestro Bobee Padilla that consists of a cartoonish image of Walton charging through a glass window.

In the past, Walton has spoofed S.A. jobs such as Wal-Mart's perennially cheerful "people greeters," hobbies such as "bouldering" (climbing indoors without the aid of harnesses, ropes or gloves), the Texas cable TV convention downtown, a hearse used for daily transportation and spooky legends such as that age-old yarn about the ghosts of schoolchildren helping cars over railroad tracks on the South Side.

He tosses in British accents, snide remarks and, occasionally, a movie scene that's comically out of place. He pokes fun at others, but in the end, makes sure he's the primary butt of the joke.
Walton is a mere lad of 27, but looks quite a bit older. "I get 40s all the time," he says, "probably because I started going bald when I was 17."

His job has reaped many an injury. He's been bucked by a steer, fallen on ice, been body-slammed by wrestlers and had his forehead dented by a suction fan.
None of this has stopped the driven Walton, however, from returning every day to his five-day-a-week gig on San Antonio's Fox affiliate.

Amazingly, the KABB job, which he's held since last summer, is his first on-air position. The Kingston, Jamaica, native was working behind-the-scenes as a producer of news for a Miami station when he got the idea for his feature. He sent out a demo tape, and one of the bites he got was in San Antonio. KABB General Manager John Seabers said the station had revamped the news for a younger audience earlier in the year and felt Walton would be a perfect fit.
"Our product runs longer than the other newscasts, and we wanted a feature that would be upbeat and informative," says Seabers. "After all, we run a lot of local stories, and the news of the day may not include much that is very uplifting."

Enter Walton. He brings a new perspective to events and qualities that make San Antonio such a unique and diverse city.

"He's creative and funny and stands out," adds Seabers. "He's one of the most recognizable faces on our news."

Walton particularly enjoys giving autographs to teen-agers and other young viewers; often, they'll ask him to sign their face, arms or legs.

Although he was hired to appeal to KABB's target demographic - viewers 18 to 34 - Seabers believes Walton crosses all age barriers.
As a 45-year-old who's grown addicted to this talented character's strange brand of fun, I heartily concur.
